Heat Wave Puts Pets At Risk
Portland, OR August 5, 2008 3:41 p.m.
Much of Oregon is under a heat wave, and there is no relief in sight until Thursday. The Oregon Humane Society is reminding people that cats and dogs get overheated much more easily in the heat because of their fur, and owners need to be cautious.
David Lytle is a spokesman for the Oregon Humane Society. He says the best place for your pet is inside the house with you, near an air conditioner or fan.
David Lytle: "If you are hot it means your pet is really hot, too. So the two big things are shade and water. You know if you have a nice, cool basement, keep your animal indoors in your nice, cool basement, they'll be much happier."
Lyle says although many people like to take their pets along on errands, he encourages leaving pets at home when it's hot. Lytle says temperatures in cars shoot up quickly and can be "a death sentence" for pets.
