Officials Still Investigating Fatal Police Shooting In Silverton
Portland, OR July 7, 2008 1:35 p.m.
A week after a fatal police shooting in Silverton, Marion County authorities say their investigation into the incident is expected to last another two weeks. Rob Manning reports.
The official word about what happened to Andrew James Hanlon on the night of June 30th is brief: Police responded to a burglary call, and officer Tony Gonzalez confronted the 20 year-old Irish national.
Doug Hanson: “During the encounter, Silverton police officer, Tony Gonzalez, ended up shooting Andrew Hanlon, who expired at the scene.”
That’s Marion County Deputy DA Doug Hanson, reading from a press release.
He declined to answer questions, saying the investigation was ongoing. But relatives and neighbors of Hanlon's have told the press that he had a history of mental illness, and they've estimated the number of shots fired.
In Hanlon’s home country of Ireland, his shooting is making national headlines.
Deputy DA Hanson says he won’t give more information until the case reaches a grand jury -- probably in about two weeks.
